Irn-Bru themed gritter to be named after public vote with four brilliant options on the table

A vote is underway to let fans of Scotland's national soft drink to name one of the country's ice gritters.

Irn Bru has given Scots four options to choose from to find a new name for the latest addition to Scotland's fleet of well named road gritters.

It comes after transport chiefs named one gritter "Yes Sir, Ice Can Boogie" after the song became our unofficial national anthem when the Scotland national football team qualified for the EURO 2021 competition.

But after an eagle-eyed fan noticed the similarity between the gritter's paintwork and the iconic Irn Bru packaging, they sparked an online conversation about naming a gritter.

Now, a vote is scheduled to run from Friday 18 to Monday 21 December.

The four options are: ‘Grits you through’, 'IRN-BRRRRRU’, ‘Made in Scotland from Gritters’ and 'Bru Grit’.

'Made in Scotland from Gritters' took an early lead on Facebook, followed closely by 'Grits you through'.

Amey, which operates its gritter fleet on behalf of Transport Scotland, has a proud tradition of handing iconic names to members of its fleet such as ‘Spready Mercury’, ‘Sir Salter Scott’, ‘Buzz Iceclear’ and the recently coined classic, ‘ Yes Sir, Ice can Boogie’. Once a winner is selected it will be available for tracking through Traffic Scotland’s interactive service.

Adrian Troy, AG Barr Head of Marketing, said: “We know that IRN-RBU fans have a great sense of humour and after a tough year for everyone, we wanted to give the nation the chance to have some fun in our own unique way”.

“Scotland’s gritters really do help us get through and we hope that this opportunity provides a smile for our fans as we look forward to a new year”.
