Irishwoman Sarah McCormack wins World Mountain Running Association World Cup series

Irishwoman Sarah McCormack has won the World Mountain Running Association World Cup series after a number of events around the world.

The World Cup series includes seven events, six of which she competed in on her way to the trophy, ending with a 2nd place finish at the final event in Slovenia at Smarna Gora.

She picked up a win at the Snowdon Race in the UK as her top result, as well as three second places in France, Italy and Slovenia.

Sarah said: “I’m really pleased with the World Cup win, it definitely wasn’t what I was expecting at the start of the year.

"There was a really wide variety of race routes, from fast up & down routes like Smarna Gora (10k, 700m ascent) to long up & downs like Sierre Zinal (31k, 1800m ascent) and long uphill only races like Drei Zinnen (17k, 1300m ascent).

“I think winning has shown me that I’ve made some progress with my hill strength, but there are still things I can improve on.

"The other runners and friends in the series also inspire me to keep trying to get better - people like Sarah Tunstall who won two of the races and is an uphill machine!”

Sarah McCormack competed in six out of the seven races, which are all held in a different country, missing only the Broken Arrow Sky Race in the USA.
