Irishwoman rescued from sea in Italy 'jumped overboard of her own will', officials claim

An Irishwoman who was rescued from the sea in Italy chose to jump overboard, it has been claimed.

A rescue mission was launched after the woman plunged into the water from a MSC Cruises ferry last week.

It was first reported that she had fallen overboard while the cruise was in the port of Genoa.

However, a spokesperson for MSC reportedly claimed she jumped "of her own will".

They told the Irish Sun: "On Monday June 17 in the evening whilst MSC Seaview was in port in Genoa a female guest of Irish nationality chose, of her own will, to jump overboard.

"In order to rescue the guest, a crew member from the ship jumped in the water to provide immediate assistance.

"The passenger was recovered in minutes and our medical staff provided first medical care on board.

"Shortly after, the passenger was taken ashore for further medical attention.

"She was joined by her family members who were travelling with her. The crew member who provided assistance is in good health."

It's understood the ship's schedule was not interrupted due to the incident.
