Irishman who sells religious goods charged over crashing truck into Russian Embassy in Dublin

A 49-year-old man who sells religious goods has been charged with causing criminal damage to the gates of the Russian embassy and dangerous driving.

Desmond Wisely, of Tully, Ballinamore, Co Leitrim, represented himself when his case was called at Tallaght District Court on Tuesday and both offences relate to the same Orwell Road location.

Garda Aisling Conroy gave evidence of arresting Mr Wisely at Rathfarnham Garda Station at 7.20pm on Monday night.

She told Judge Patricia McNamara the defendant made no reply after being charged and cautioned.

Garda Conroy said there was no objection to bail as long as the defendant agreed to certain conditions, including staying away from Orwell Road, Dublin 14 and Anglesea Road, Dublin 4.

Other conditions being sought were that Mr Wisely must refrain from posting on social media anything relating to the case and the accused must not directly or indirectly contact Russian embassy staff.

Judge McNamara asked Mr Wisely if he understood the requests from Gardai and what was being asked of him.

He replied: “I do indeed, that’s no problem, thank you.”

Garda Conroy said she was awaiting directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions and she asked Judge McNamara if the case could be adjourned for seven weeks.

Mr Wisely is due to return to Tallaght District Court on April 26 for DPP directions.
