Irishman's brilliant garda checkpoint story sums up 'bonkers' 2021

An Irishman's story from a garda checkpoint sums up the mad 2021 that is unfolding before our eyes.

Paul Hayes tweeted on Wednesday afternoon how he was stopped at a Dublin checkpoint and was overjoyed with the interaction.

He said: "Just got breathalysed by a lovely guard in Rathmines. I almost cried with the novelty of the human interaction. Hope he is there for a while. I might go back again."

Hundreds of people have liked and shared the tweet which RTE's Ryan Tubridy even read out on his morning radio show, saying it summed up the "bonkers" world we are currently living in.

It isn't the first nice checkpoint story that has spread on social media in recent weeks after an officer posted on a Dublin checkpoint warmed the hearts of the nation after he quickly ushered through parents who were on a drive to stop their young baby from crying in January.

Doug Leddin, a marketing manager based in Dublin, took to Twitter to recount being stopped at a Covid-19 travel checkpoint and quizzed by a Garda about the purpose of his travel.

“Is the purpose of your trip essential?” the Garda asked, to which Leddin explained that he was trying to stop his baby from crying by driving around in the hopes that the gentle movement would suit the child.

“‘Oh jaysus, nothing more essential, on ya go,’” The Garda responded as he rushed the young family through.

Leddin concluded: “Irish Guards can be gas” before assuring readers that he was still abiding by Covid-19 restrictions while soothing his child, as he was only 3.5km from his home.
