Irishman pots incredible 147 from his basement snooker table

An Irishman has filmed the seven minutes in which he managed to achieve snooker's greatest feat - potting a 147.

Karl Hughes, from Co Monaghan, was filming himself practising on his home snooker table last Friday, when he decided to go all in and aim for the top score.

Monaghan might be a long way from The Crucible, but as you can see in the video, Karl makes his achievement look effortless and professional.

"I hadn't played in about 6 years!" says Karl. "Lockdown took me out of retirement."

Before his hiatus, Karl had been a regular snooker player throughout his life, and has played for over 30 years.

"I've been playing since I was 12 or 13," he added. "My dad used to own a snooker club in Monaghan called The Spot."

Despite his skills, Karl maintains that he treats snooker strictly as a pastime.

He said: "I only ever played as a hobby. I'd attempted this a few times before. I'd missed the yellow, green and pink in previous efforts - so it was a relief to finally get this!

"But I'm obviously very happy to finally get this - and have it recorded too! I'm actually shocked at the attention it's getting! I didn't think it was that big of a deal!"
