Irishman 'linked to organised crime' arrested in Spanish hotel over alleged Holland kidnapping

An Irishman wanted in Holland for alleged kidnapping has been arrested in a Spanish hotel.

Spanish police on the holiday island of Tenerife revealed today they were holding a 32-year-old man on a European Arrest Warrant after a tip-off from colleagues in the Costa del Sol resort of Marbella.

The unnamed fugitive was described as someone who is “allegedly linked to organised crime”.

Cops allege he had used a fake identity to check into a hotel in Adeje, in the south of Tenerife.

The hotel where he was arrested has not been identified.

It was not immediately clear this morning if he has already appeared before a judge and asked whether he intends fighting extradition to Holland.

Extradition hearings take place at a court in Madrid, although video-link technology is sometimes used so fugitives do not have to be flown to the Spanish capital and can be kept nearer their place of arrest while their fate is decided.

A spokesman for Spain’s National Police confirmed: “The National Police has arrested an Irish man aged 32 allegedly linked to organised crime.

“He was wanted on a European Arrest Warrant issued by the Dutch authorities for a crime of kidnap.

“Investigators, thanks to information supplied by National Police colleagues in Marbella, were informed the fugitive who is allegedly linked to organised crime could be in the south of Tenerife.

“Police located this person who was staying at a hotel in Adeje with a false identity.

“Once they had taken appropriate security measures officers proceeded to identify this man.

“After confirming it was the person who was wanted, police arrested and took him to the nearest station.”
