Irishman left fighting for his life after car crash in Malta named as David Cooley

An elderly Irishman who is fighting for his life after a car crash in Malta has been named as David Cooley.

Cooley, who is in his 60s, was struck by a car at around 1am on Saturday morning in Sliema.

Maltese website TVM reported that the Mercedes Smart car which hit Cooley was being driven by a 30-year-old man from Mosta.

They said: “On impact, the Irishman ended up on the windscreen, then slid off and ended up on the pavement.

Elderly Irishman in critical condition after road incident in Malta 

“An ambulance was called to the scene and transferred the man to hospital, where he was immediately certified to be in a serious condition and in danger of dying."

TVM said that district police officers, led by Inspector Jonathan Ransley, have started an investigation at the site of the incident.

Duty Magistrate Caroline Farrugia Frendo is conducting an inquiry, and has appointed technical expert Mario Buttigieg, architect Richard Aquilina and Scene of Crime officers to assist.

Meanwhile, TVM say that following the accident the driver of the car was taken to the Police Station and failed a breathalyser test.
