Irishman John Quill sent off against England while playing for USA in Rugby World Cup

Cork native John Quill became the first player to be sent off during this year's World Cup while playing against England - but he wasn't playing for Ireland.

The one-time Munster Academy flanker has been playing for the USA national team since 2012, and has earned 37 caps for his new country.

But after a horror tackle on England star Owen Farrell after a knock-on, Quill was given his marching orders before England went on to win 45-7 in the Kobe Misaki Stadium.

The flanker could have no complaints after planting his shoulder into Owen Farrell’s jaw and sparking a brief brawl.

The rugby minnows had dreamed of a first win in six attempts against England but lacked the power to combat England’s marauding forwards.

Captain George Ford opened the floodgates with his side’s first try before Billy Vunipola, Luke Cowan-Dickie, Joe Cokanasiga (twice), Ruaridh McConnochie and Lewis Ludlam joined the spree.

The Americans did manage a consolation try from replacement Bryce Campbell but their night will be remembered for Youghal native John Quill becoming the first player in the tournament to be sent off.
