Irishman dies while attempting to climb Mount Kenya

A 40-year-old Irishman has died after attempting to climb Mount Kenya, the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa.

In a statement, the Kenya Wildlife Service said the deceased had developed breathing complications shortly before he was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

The statement said: "KWS wishes to inform the public that at around 6am on Thursday January 28, an Irish national who went mountain climbing on Mt Kenya developed some breathing problems in one of the stopovers, the Australian hut."

KWS said the incident was reported and a rescue team responded by evacuating the man to Mackinder’s. He was then airlifted to Nanyuki Cottage Hospital where he sadly passed away.

"The client who was in a critical condition and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital," they said.

The man accessed Mount Kenya National Park through the Naromoru gate on January 25.

The Kenya Wildlife Services has offered their sincere condolences to the man's family.

The Irish Mirror has contacted the Department of Foreign Affairs for more detail.
