Irishman, 60s, killed in tragic lawnmower accident at Laois golf club

A man was killed in a tragic lawnmower accident at a Laois golf club.

The horrific incident happened at Mountrath Golf Club in Knockanina, Mountrath on Tuesday morning.

A man, who is aged in his 60s, was seriously injured and emergency services were called to the scene at around 9am.

The man was rushed to Midland Regional Hospital in Portlaoise, where he was pronounced dead.

Both the gardai and the Health and Safety Authority are carrying out investigations into the tragic incident.

A garda spokeswoman said: "Gardaí attended the scene of a workplace accident at a leisure facility in Mountrath area of Co Laois on May 5, at approximately 9am.

"A male in his 60s was injured during an incident involving a mower.

"He was brought to Midland Regional Hospital, Portlaoise, where he was pronounced dead.

"The Health and Safety Authority have been notified and will be investigating the matter."

This is the second such tragedy to occur in Ireland in a matter of days after a Tipperary businessman died after falling off a ride-on lawnmower at home.

It is understood father-of-three Andrew Kearney, 49, struck his head in the freak fall as he mowed his front lawn at Marlfield Road in Clonmel, Tipperary.

The rally driver spent several days in intensive care at Cork University Hospital before passing away last Sunday.

Mr Kearney was CEO of multinational engineering company SEPAM, set up by his father Gus.

He was also involved in the past pupils’ union at nearby Rockwell College, where he completed his Leaving Certificate in 1989.

Local TD Jackie Cahill, Fianna Fail, said: “This was a very tragic accident for the Kearney family. I wish to express my sincere condolences at this sad time.”
