Irishman, 42, dies following cycling accident in Thailand

An Irish man has died following a collision in Chiang Mai, in Thailand.

John Martyn, 42, who is originally from Galway, was on a cycling trip when he tragically passed following a traffic collision.

It's understood he passed away on February 9 but his body was not formally identified until Thursday.

John had been working in Beijing, China in education but had recently taken a trip to north Thailand.

The local 55 Cycling Club in Chiang Mai had issued an appeal seeking information earlier this week after John was initially reported missing.

It said that he had been due to check out of his hostel on February 16 but had not been seen for a number of days.

The post said his “fellow cycling buddies” were concerned for him and described John as “a well liked rider, friendly and an avid traveller.”

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed that it was aware of the case and was providing consular assistance to Martyn's family.

He was unmarried and was due to turn 43 next month.
