Irishman, 29, tragically killed by avalanche while skiing in Swiss Alps

An Irishman was tragically killed by an avalanche while skiing in Switzerland at the weekend.

The unnamed 29-year-old was one of seven people to die on the Swiss Alps in the space of just three days.

It is understood he was part of a group of three people skiing in the Col des Gentianes area of Siviez, near Nendaz.

A slab of snow gave way to the avalanche, with the Irishman later dying of his injuries at Sion Hospital, Swis Info reports.

The weekend saw hordes of people hitting the slopes after heavy snow across the country.

According to local media, the avalanche risk was at its second highest level across most of the Swiss Alps.

The Department of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman said: “The Department is aware of the case and stands ready to provide consular assistance.”
