Irish woman 'gang-raped by four migrants' at Spanish holiday resort

An Irish woman was allegedly gang-raped by four migrants as she stopped to help them in a Spanish holiday resort, it has been reported.

The 36-year-old was reportedly attacked in Puerto Rico on the island of Gran Canaria where she has lived for several years with her family.

Local media said she came across four North African migrants setting up camp in the Agua La Perra park after arriving on the island by boat.

She stopped to talk to the men about their situation and was allegedly attacked and gang raped.

The woman later made her way to a clinic where she was examined by a doctor who compiled a detailed report listing her injuries.

Spain’s Civil Guard in the Puerto Rico-Mogan office launched an investigation to locate and arrest the suspects, aged between 18 and 35.

The victim provided police with descriptions of the four men who have since been arrested and remanded in prison.

The suspects are believed to be from the Maghreb region of North Africa and had been kicked out of a Red Cross centre for immigrants for breaking the rules.

At least one had already been arrested for other similar crimes in the Mogan area, but was released according to a report in El Dia.

The men appeared in court on Wednesday to answer to five charges of sexual assault; one each for three of the accused and two for the fourth.

On Friday the Mayor of Mogan, Onalia Bueno, said she hoped the detainees would be transferred to the Foreigners Internment Centre in Las Palmas before being deported.
