Irish women amongst heaviest drinkers in the world, study finds

Irish women are amongst the heaviest female drinkers in the world, a shocking study has revealed.

They rank fourth from a total of 189 countries with Lithuanian, Moldova, and the Czech Republic in the top three.

Additionally there has been a nosedive in the number of teetotallers in Ireland, a report in the Lancet medical journal revealed.

The number of female non-drinkers has fallen from 26% in 1990 to 13% in 2017.

Overall Ireland is ranked fifth in world rankings on alcohol consumption with adults drinking more than 13 litres of alcohol a year, the Irish Independent reports.

Furthermore binge drinking has risen by 20% since 1990 in both men and women, figures from the new study by Jakob Manthey, TU Dresden, Germany, and Dr Jürgen Rehm, Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, Toronto, Canada revealed.

Currently 40% of adults binge drink and the number is expected to go up by another 2% by 2030.
