Irish woman drowns after being swept away by strong currents in southern France

An Irish woman drowned after she was swept away by strong currents off the coast of southern France.

The woman drowned in Leucate in the Aude region on Friday.

She was originally from Dublin but lived in nearby Perpignan.

According to French media reports, she enjoyed lunch with her partner at a restaurant along the beach before going into the sea to swim.

She was swept away by strong waves at a beach that is not supervised by lifeguards.

Her partner, who was also swimming in the sea, attempted to revive the woman for close to 30 minutes after carrying her out of the water.

Lifeguards soon arrived to the scene.

The beach, near the private beaches of Poulpe and Chez Biquet, where she died is not supervised by lifeguards.

The Department of Foreign Affairs is providing consular assistance to her family.

A spokesperson said: “The Department is aware of the case and providing consular assistance.”
