Irish woman dies after falling from seventh floor of building in Germany

An Irish woman tragically died after falling from the seventh floor of a building in Germany.

The 23-year-old Irish tourist fell from the seventh floor of a house on Wilhelmstrasse in Berlin Mitte, according to local reports.

She is believed to be from the Johnstown area close to Naas in Co Kildare.

German police say the cause of the fall isn't known yet.

Emergency services were alerted at around 4.20am after a female resident discovered the woman.

The young Irish woman received medical treatment but efforts to revive her were unsuccessful and stopped after half an hour.

A number of young people were staying in the apartment at the time said a spokesperson for the fire department.

It is believed that three other Irish citizens were in the building at the time.

They now getting pastoral care from the authorities, a spokesperson for the Berlin Fire Brigade added.

German police are investigating the incident as is customary but they don't suspect a crime has been committed.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says is "aware of the case and providing consular assistance."

It is understood that the woman was on holiday in Germany when she died.

Tributes have been paid to the young woman who was described by friends as "a great laugh" and "always full of chat and smiles".

One former co-worker said: "Such sad news to hear. One of the best girls I ever had working with me for years.

"Such a great laugh and always full of chat and smiles. R.I.P. we will all never forget you. Fly high with the angels."

Local Social Democrats Councillor Bill Clear said the community was in shock after hearing the news.

He said: "My heart goes out to the family, it's a terrible tragedy to happen to any family.

"I'm a father myself and I can't even imagine what they're going through.

"It's shocking to hear and it was very sad to hear the news."
