Irish whiskey sales surpass $1 billion in the US and Conor McGregor is taking all the credit

Conor McGregor reckons that he's the reason for the dramatic rise in Irish whiskey sales in the US this year.

The MMA star bragged on social media after reports showed that US sales of the quintessentially Irish tipple had already topped $1 billion.

Whiskey has always been popular Stateside, with Jameson and Bushmills leading the way, but there's been a new kid on the block since late last year - McGregor's Proper no. Twelve.

Sales in the US have already topped $1 billion for the year to date, and some of that can be accounted to the rise of Proper no. Twelve - with Jameson still dominating the lion's share of the market.

And McGregor took to social media to celebrate, thanking fans who helped the brand sell a reported 200,000 nine litre cases of the whiskey.

The Crumlin man tweeted: "Was there ever any doubt I’d turn Whiskey to a Billi? I turned “human cock fighting” to 4.2.

"I’m gonna toast on this fine Thursday this amazing news. Sláinte to the only true Irish Whiskey we have left,#ProperWhiskey! Irish owned forever."

The humble Dubliner, who calls himself 'The Notorious' added: "Thank you all. It has been my pleasure."
