Irish weather update: Met Eireann confirms how long freezing weather will last, with more snow and ice due

Ireland is well and truly in the throes of a cold snap, with plummeting temperatures reaching every corner of the map and some counties starting to see snow.

And we might have a while to wait before there's any improvement temperature-wise, with Met Eireann predicting that the freezing conditions will last until the middle of next week.

A spokesperson for the forecaster said it's likely to be very cold "up to midweek," adding that we're liable to see some "frost at night" as well as periods of cold sunshine during the day.

There's a risk of frost and ice – as well as the threat of freezing fog in parts of the country – until next Wednesday.

Then and only then will things start to pick up, with Met Eireann looking ahead to a day that will start cold before the fog clears on a day that will be "bright and mostly dry in the east" and warm up in the south and west.

The coldest conditions will come on Sunday evening, when temperatures will plunge as low as minus three at night.

As for this weekend, we're likely to see showery rain tomorrow in coastal counties in the west, while it'll stay mostly dry in inland counties.

The cold weather forecast comes after Met Eireann this morning issued a Status Yellow wind warning for the entire country.

The advisory began at 11am this morning and will be in place until 6am on Saturday morning.

The forecaster said on its website: "Strong northerly winds today will gust up to 100km/h with a slight risk of coastal flooding."

It came on a day when snow fell in many parts of the country.

The national forecaster said: "Widespread frost this morning and icy stretches on untreated surfaces. Dry in the east with sunny spells, frequent showers affect the western half of the country."
