Irish weather: Sudden thunderstorm leads to flooding in Killarney, Co Kerry as Met Eireann forecasts 28C heat

Ireland may be experiencing its warmest week of the year so far, but some areas could still experience thundery downpours.

Met Eireann is forecasting a hot and humid week, but parts of the country are still at risk of flooding due to thunderstorms.

Heavy downpours of rain battered Killarney, Co Kerry on Tuesday evening as a brief storm passed by.

Parts of the town experienced flooding, with the volume of water was strong enough to "lift manhole covers".

Fire station officer Paudie Mangan told the Examiner: "The water flowed with such force it lifted manhole covers.

"It was the sheer volume of water that came down so suddenly."

Locals told the newspaper that it had been 50 years since they witnessed such a storm at this time of the year.

Meanwhile, Kerry - along with five more counties - have been hit with a rare Status Yellow high-temperature warning.

Galway, Mayo, Clare, Limerick, Kerry and Cork have been issued with the caution as temperatures look set to exceed 27C on Thursday.

The warning is valid between 1pm and 7pm on Thursday.

A forecaster said: "Status Yellow - High-Temperature warning for Galway, Mayo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick.

"Temperatures will be in excess of 27.0 degrees Celsius, during Thursday afternoon."

The counties on the western coast will experience the warmest conditions - with highs of 28C - on what will be a dry, sunny but breezy day.

Despite being issued with a high-temperature warning, Kerry and other counties in the southwest may be hit with thunderstorms.

A forecaster said: "Thursday will be a dry, fairly sunny, but rather breezy day, with the risk of isolated heavy or possibly thundery showers in the southwest.

"Warm and close for most, with top temperatures reaching of 24 to 28 C., peaking over the southwest, mid-west and west of the country, but a few degrees lower along eastern coastal fringes in moderate to fresh east to northeasterly breezes."
