Irish weather: Ireland to have hottest day of the year today with Met Eireann forecasting temperatures of 22 degrees

Ireland is to have its hottest day of the year today, with temperatures predicted to hit 22C.

Most of the country will bask in warm sunshine.

But the weather chiefs predict a “northerly airflow” will arrive later tonight, sparking a period of cooler temperatures for the coming days.

Despite the warm conditions being forecast, thundery or heavy showers are expected in parts of the country this afternoon.

The north-west and east will be slightly colder, while winds through the day will be light.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: “Saturday will be warm and sunny although showers, some heavy with a risk of thunder, will develop in the afternoon.

“Highest temperatures of 18C to 22C, but cooler in the north-west and along eastern coasts, with maximum values of 14C to 17C.”

But the mercury will plunge to 0C on Sunday and Monday night.

The forecaster said: “Becoming cooler and blustery in a northerly airflow. Dry and bright with a touch of frost possible at night.”

Sunday will be breezy and much cooler than recent days.

Met Eireann predict it will be rather cloudy with outbreaks of rain during the morning.

It will become dry with sunny spells by the afternoon with highest temperatures of 14 degrees.

Monday is due to be dry and cool with sunshine in most parts, although it will be somewhat cloudier in the northwest.

Temperatures will fall at night to between -1 and +2 and there will be a risk of grass frost in places.

Tuesday is mostly dry apart from some showers in the northwest during the morning, but it will be rather cloudy and cool.
