Irish weather forecast: Yellow warning in place as Met Eireann warns of snow and subzero temperatures

Parts of the country will be hit by freezing temperatures and snow as a Status yellow weather warning remains in place.

Met Eireann has issued a snow-ice warning for 10 counties- Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Roscommon, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Longford and Louth.

It will be valid from midnight on Tuesday until 1.00 pm on the same day.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: “Falls of hail, sleet, and some snow will occur overnight and on Tuesday morning, with some accumulations of snow in places. Icy stretches also.”

Tuesday will start off cold and blustery with sunny spells and widespread showers of hail and thunder.

“Falls of sleet and snow are possible, mainly on high ground. Highest temperatures of just 5C to 8C and feeling colder in strengthening northwesterly winds.”

Tuesday night will see more wintry falls with the risk of hail and thunder.

“However, the showers will tend to become confined to western and northern coastal counties later in the night.

“Cold overnight with frost and ice forming in sheltered spots. Lowest temperatures of -1C to +3C.”

Wednesday morning will be a bright and blustery day with sunshine and scattered showers of rain or hail.

“Cloudier conditions with showery rain and sleet will move in across Ulster and east Leinster later in the day.

“Top temperatures of 5C to 9C in fresh to strong northerly winds.”

Showery rain and sleet are expected overnight, with the risk of some snowfall on mountains on Wednesday night.

“Minimum temperatures of -1C to +4C with the fresh northerly breeze easing.”
