Irish weather forecast: Which parts of Ireland will get hit with the most flooding this weekend?

Ireland will be lashed by heavy rain and thundery showers as weather chiefs predict a washout weekend.

The worst hit areas will be in the south and east of the country, as a band of rain moves across Ireland on Saturday.

Experts have warned that Munster and south Leinster are at the most risk of being hit by flooding after the downpours.

There will also be some heavy showers today with the strongest rainfall in the west, leading to a possibility of "localised flooding".

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Sunny spells and scattered showers today. Some of the showers will be heavy and with an increasing risk of thunderstorms leading to localised flooding.

"Highest temperatures 15 to 17 degrees.

"The weekend will be breezy and unsettled, with showers or longer spells of rain, heavy and possibly thundery at times. Rainfall expected to be well above normal.

"Some bright or short sunny spells on Saturday but showers too, some heavy in northern counties. A spell of heavy and thundery rain will affect Munster and south Leinster in the early afternoon and this will affect all but the northwest by nightfall.

"Some spot flooding is possible in southern and eastern areas. Top temperatures 13 to 17 C. Fresh southwest winds will moderate during the day, but will increase strong and gusty in the evening or early night in southern coastal counties.

"Very wet in southern and eastern areas overnight with an ongoing risk of spot flooding. More showery elsewhere, with lows of 8 to 11C.

"Fresh and breezy on Sunday with showers, some heavy. Occasional bright or sunny spells also. Top temperatures of 14 to 16 C.

"Cold and mainly dry overnight, with some patches of mist and fog. Lows of 4 to 8 C., in slackening northwest or variable breezes."
