Weather forecast for Christmas week in Ireland as Met Eireann shares festive update

Met Eireann has shared its Christmas Day forecast - and revealed the likelihood of snow on the big day.

Unfortunately dreams of a white Christmas will probably be dashed, with a period of "dry, chilly and settled weather" arriving just in time for the 25th.

However it will remain cold for the rest of this week, with freezing temperatures expected overnight on Friday and Saturday.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Tonight will start dry in most areas with clear spells. Showers in the southwest will spread across Munster and south Leinster.

"They will clear again later and temperatures will drop close to freezing, giving some frost and the risk of ice on roads. Some fog is likely to form as well.

"Lowest temperatures of 0 to 3 degrees in little or no wind.

"Saturday is looking largely dry with sunny spells. A few showers will affect the south later in the day and it may stay misty in some parts.

"Highest temperatures of 4 to 6 degrees in light breezes.

"Some showers on Saturday night in the west and north overnight but generally dry elsewhere and with some frost. Minimum temperatures of 0 to 3 degrees."

Here is the full forecast, so far, for Christmas week:

Monday, December 23

According to Met Eireann, Monday is looking mainly dry with sunny spells and just a few showers. Highest temperatures will be 6 to 9 degrees in moderate westerly breezes.

Showers will become isolated overnight with good clear spells developing. Minimum temperatures of 0 to 3 degrees with a patchy frost.

Tuesday, December 24

Current trends suggest high pressure will build towards Ireland for Christmas Eve, as well as Christmas Day itself, with an increased likelihood of dry, chilly and settled weather.

Wednesday, December 25

Looking ahead for Christmas Day, experts are predicting a largely uneventful period of weather, as a high pressure system moves in.

Thursday, December 26 onwards

Met Eireann have not yet released their forecast for St Stephen's Day and beyond.
