Irish weather forecast: Weekend washout as thunderstorms, heavy rain and flooding expected

Bring your brollies if out and about on Saturday and Sunday as Met Eireann predicts another weekend washout.

If you thought that we were over the worst of the thunder and lightening storms this week, then you were wrong.

The national forecaster says that we're in for a weekend of heavy showers, lower than usual temperatures and thunderstorms with risks of flooding in some areas.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Heavy scattered showers today merging into longer spells of rain through the day, with a risk of some flooding.

What causes thunder and lightning?

"Further thunderstorm activity expected also. Highest temperatures of 16 to 19 degrees and very blustery with fresh and gusty southwesterly winds veering northerly by evening.

"Tonight will see heavy showers or longer spells of rain continuing tonight, mainly in Munster and Leinster, with drier conditions moving into parts of the north.

"Lowest temperatures of 11 to 13 degrees. Moderate west to northwest winds will be fresh to strong at times along coasts.

"Fresher and cooler tomorrow, Sunday.

"Showery rain will be slow to clear the eastern half of the country, but drier, brighter conditions with isolated showers in the west will gradually extend eastwards through the day.

"Feeling cooler than recent days with highest temperatures of 14 to 17 degrees. Winds will be light to moderate northwesterly."
