Irish weather forecast: Weekend set for dry and sunny start, but temperatures set to plunge tonight

This weekend will start off warm and sunny, but forecasters are warning that temperatures will plunge to minus 1 tonight.

Early drizzle will clear off on Saturday morning, with the mercury expected to reach as high as 13C - with plenty of sunshine forecast for the majority of the country.

Temperatures will take a turn to freezing tonight, with lowest values of minus 1 to plus 3C.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Damp and misty this morning with remaining rain and drizzle from overnight soon clearing, although scattered showers will linger in parts of the southwest into this afternoon.

"Becoming dry and bright elsewhere with sunny spells gradually increasing as the day goes on.

"Top temperatures of 10 to 13C in light to moderate easterly breezes, occasionally fresh near eastern and southern coasts.

"Turning cold tonight, with clear spells and with some frost in rural areas. Largely dry, apart from a few showers along in north Ulster.

"Mist and fog patches will form in the light east to northeast or variable breezes.

"Lowest temperatures of minus 1 to 3C."

Met Eireann says that Sunday will be mainly dry and bright, with a mix of cloud and sunny spells, with top temperatures of 10 to 14C.
