Irish weather forecast: 'Unsettled' weekend ahead with rain, hail showers and 'widespread frost'

A cold and rainy weekend is in store with hail showers, "widespread frost" and icy patches expected on Sunday night.

This morning will be cloudy and dry to start but outbreaks of rain will blight the remainder of the day in parts of the country.

And Met Eireann forecasters say it will remain "changeable" and "unsettled" into the weekend.

The southwest will be hit by rain later this morning before it gradually spreads eastwards through the afternoon and evening breaking up and becoming patchier as it does so, not reaching parts of the north and east until evening.

Isolated showers will follow into the west as the rain clears. Highest temperatures of 7C to 10C in mainly moderate southeast winds.

There'll be a mix of rain, fog and mist tonight with lows of 2C to 5C.

Saturday will start off dry in most places but we will be lashed by rain later in the day with the west likely to suffer the heaviest spells, according to Met Eireann.

Daytime temperatures will reach highs of 9C to 11C, coldest in Ulster.

Outbreaks of rain will become largely confined to southern and eastern counties early on Saturday night with clear spells developing elsewhere.

The rain will gradually clear southeastwards overnight but showers will arrive on western and northwestern coasts towards morning with lows of 2C to 5C.

West to southwest winds will fall light or moderate in most parts but remaining fresh to strong near west and northwest coasts.

Met Eireann said: "Sunday looks set to be a cold and showery day as light to moderate westerly breezes turn northwesterly and freshen.

"Some of the showers will be heavy with hail and a risk of isolated thunderstorms. Top temperatures of 7C to 10C."

And temperatures will fall to a freezing -1C on Sunday night as forecasters warned it will be "a very cold night" with "widespread frost" and "icy patches".
