Irish weather forecast: Unsettled bank holiday weekend in store as Met Eireann warn there is a risk of thunder next week

An unsettled bank holiday weekend is in store with a mix of both sunshine and showers expected across the country.

Some patches of rain, drizzle and mist are expected later today but it will become largely dry for a time later this afternoon, with some limited bright or sunny breaks developing.

However more persistent rain will arrive along Atlantic coasts this evening, with highs of 14 to 18C.

It will become windier tomorrow, particularly in the west, but some sunny spells are expected on the east coast, and temperatures will remain similar to Saturday.

Looking ahead to next week, Met Eireann warned that a low pressure system looks set to dominate, as temperatures dip to below average for the time of year.

A forecaster said: "Bank Holiday Monday will bring a mix of sunshine and showers. Some of the showers could be heavy, especially in the west and northwest.

"Top temperatures will range from 13 to 16C in moderate southwesterly breezes.

"Many central and eastern areas will be dry at first on Monday night, but showers will continue to affect the west and northwest.

"In Munster, the showers will merge to a longer spell of rain and this rain will move up over the southern half of the country by morning. Some heavy bursts look likely in mountainous regions.

"Lows of 5 to 9C in light variable breezes."

And as the week goes on weather experts are warning there is a risk that thundery downpours could hit in some parts of the country.

A forecaster added: "Wednesday will be another rather cool day with bright spells and scattered showers. Some of the showers will be heavy with a slight risk of thunder.

"Highs of 11 to 14C in light northerly breezes.

"Further showers expected on Thursday, frequent during the afternoon with a risk of slow-moving thundery downpours in the slack winds. Top temperatures 11 to 15C."
