Irish weather forecast: UK set for hottest ever day while Met Eireann predicts cooler day for Ireland

While the UK is set for their hottest ever day, temperatures in Ireland are lagging well behind.

Despite our nearest neighbours being set for scorching temperatures of 39C, breezes from the Atlantic will keep Ireland at a cooler 25C today.

And while these temperatures are not something we should turn our noses up at, they pale in comparison to conditions in the UK at the moment.

Parts of Great Britain will experience temperatures well over 35C.

For us though, today will be mainly dry with sunny spells but there is a slight chance of a light shower with temperatures not dropping below the 20s.

It's going to be very humid and this will travel into the night with temperatures remaining as high as the mid-teens on Thursday night.

There will be clear spells and a few isolated showers overnight remaining rather humid making it as hard to sleep as it has been all week.

As well as this, there is a marine and environmental warning still in place for the whole of the country.

The status yellow, small craft warning means that "Southeast winds will reach force 6 or higher at times today on Irish coasts from Carnsore Point to Slyne Head to Malin Head, extending to all Irish coasts this evening."

There is also a status yellow blight warning in place and Met Eireann states: "Weather conditions conducive to the spread of potato blight will develop across Ireland all this week."

Across the water, Britain may enjoy its hottest day ever today, with the Met Office predicting potential temperatures of 39C.

The intense heat will coincide with thunderstorms today and tomorrow morning, prompting a Met Office severe weather warning.

Despite the downpours, most of the country will see sunshine today, with temperatures potentially exceeding the UK's 38.5C hottest day record.

According to the Met Office, there is a 60% chance the mercury could rise above the current all-time UK temperature record of 38.5C on Thursday.

"It will get into the 30s across the country and reach the mid-30s in the south-east," Met Office meteorologist Greg Dewhurst said.

"If it is to get to 39C, it will happen somewhere between London and Cambridge.

"Temperatures locally could also break July or all-time records."
