Irish weather forecast: UK heatwave warning to check on elderly neighbours as Ireland also set to bake in 26C temperatures

Public health experts in the UK have warned people to check on elderly neighbours ahead of an expected heatwave this week.

The warning comes as parts of England will hit a suffocating 34C on Wednesday, with Ireland also set to bake in sweltering 26C temperatures.

Met Eireann is forecasting a dry, hot and humid day across the country today with highest temperatures ranging from 20C to 25C.

A forecaster said: "Dry in most parts today with sunny spells developing, however, cloudier in some Atlantic coastal counties and along parts of the south coast with a little patchy rain, drizzle and mist.

"Warm and humid with highs of 20 to 25 degrees, but slightly cooler in the coastal fringes of the west and south."

And parts of the country will continue to sizzle on Tuesday, as Met Eireann has forecast highs of 26C once again.

The day will start off cloudy, but good spells of sunshine will follow with the best conditions expected in Ulster and Leinster.

A forecaster said: "Tuesday will be another warm and mostly dry day, with just patchy morning mist and drizzle affecting Munster and south Leinster.

"After a somewhat cloudy start, sunny spells will develop quite widely as the day goes on, with the lengthiest spells expected in parts of Ulster and north Leinster. Top temperatures will range 20 to 26C."

Ruth May, chief nursing officer for England, said: "Like lots of people I'm looking forward to having fun in the sun with family and friends this weekend, but nobody wants to spend a pleasant day stuck in a hospital or urgent treatment centre.

"It's really important to take simple precautions like drinking plenty of water, using high-factor sunscreen and remembering to take allergy medication if you need it - as is making sure to check in on neighbours and loved ones who can suffer the most from heat and pollen."
