Irish weather forecast: Two wind warnings issued ahead of gusts of 110km/h and 'heavy rain'

Ireland basked in the sunshine yesterday - but conditions are set to dramatically change with heavy rain forecast and wind warnings issued for three counties.

Much of the country enjoyed glorious weather yesterday with temperatures peaking around 24C in Ardee, Co Louth, making it hotter than Lanzarote, Casablanca and Rome.

But Met Eireann also issued a Status Yellow warning as gusts of up to 110kmh are set to batter the west of the country.

The alert will be in place for Mayo and Galway from 9pm - tonight until 6pm tomorrow.

A Met Eireann spokesman said: “South to south-east winds will reach mean speeds of 45kmh to 65kmh with gusts of 85kmh to 110kmh mainly in coastal areas and on exposed hills and mountains.”

Meanwhile, a second warning will be in place for Co Donegal from 6am until 9pm on Friday.

The south-west and east won’t escape either as “heavy rain” is set to lash these areas after a sunny start with highs of 16C to 20C.

Met Eireann said: “Most places will be dry with good sunshine. However, thundery rain will arrive in the southwest in the evening.”

And the weather will continue to be unsettled for several days, weather chiefs have warned.

But don't put your deckchair away yet as the warm conditions are set return next week.

A forecaster said: "High pressure will re-establish itself close to Ireland early next week with mostly dry and settled weather, with light winds and maximum temperatures in the high teens or low twenties.

"Frontal cloud and rain may however move into west and northwest counties with slightly cooler weather here."
