Irish weather forecast: Thunderstorms and hail showers to batter Ireland as Met Eireann predicts wet and windy day

Parts of Ireland will experience thunderstorms and hail showers on a wet and windy Thursday.

Met Eireann is forecasting a bright start to the day, however, showers will become widespread in the afternoon.

The national forecaster has warned of a risk of hail and thunder, and said it will be blustery at times. Highest temperatures will range from 11C to 13C.

A forecaster said: "Dry and bright to begin this morning in central and northern areas with sunny spells, but showers in the west and south will become widespread this afternoon.

"Many of the showers will be heavy, with a risk of hail and thunder. Top temperatures of 11 to 13 degrees.

"Breezy or blustery at times today, in mostly moderate to fresh southerly winds, gusty near coasts and around showers."

A cold Thursday night is in store as temperatures look set to drop to as low as 2C.

Parts of the west may get more thunderstorms as heavy showers continue into the night.

The forecaster added: "Mainly dry for a time over eastern parts of the country this evening and early tonight with just isolated showers, but the showers will continue to be frequent and heavy in the west and southwest with an ongoing risk of hail and thunder there.

"The showers will become more widespread again overnight. Lows of 2 to 8 degrees in light to moderate southerly breezes, fresh to strong and gusty near south and southwest coasts."
