Irish weather forecast: Three counties braced for snow as Met Eireann's Status Yellow warning remains in place

Three counties braced for snow as a Status Yellow warning remained in place overnight.

Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim were hit with hail, sleet and snow making travel difficult and forcing some schools to stay shut.

And wintry showers will remain common for the next few days with temperatures staying chilly.

A Met Eireann spokesman said: “Most places will be dry and bright tomorrow, with sunny spells.

“Scattered showers will however, continue to affect parts of the north and northwest of the country and some will be wintry.

“Top temperatures 5-8C .

“Moderate or fresh west to northwest breezes will back southwest and ease by evening.”

And the mercury will drop below freezing again tonight as frost and icy patches return.

The weather chiefs added: “Mostly dry, clear and cold at first, with frost and icy patches returning soon after dark.

“The frost and ice should clear most parts overnight with the exception of (possibly) Ulster, as a relatively mild airmass pushes in off the Atlantic bringing increasing cloud and outbreaks of rain over much of the south and west of the country by morning.

“Minimum temperatures minus 1C to plus 2C will occur early on in the night.”

Meanwhile in the UK, a Status Yellow warning is in place across the entire country.

Forecasters issued the warning for ice and snow across most of Britain and warned that the treacherous conditions could cause widespread travel disruption.

Up to 5cm of snow could fall on hills in south Wales while 3cm is possible on The Chilterns, Cotswolds and hills across the Midlands.

The snow warnings are in until 12pm today.

The Met Office said: “Wintry showers and icy stretches likely to bring some travel disruption.

“Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services .

“Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces

“Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.”
