Irish weather forecast: Thousands of homes and businesses left without power after Storm Hannah

Thousands of homes and businesses in Ireland have been left without power after Storm Hannah battered the south west of the country.

ESB Networks said crews began working early on Saturday morning to restore electricity to more than 32,0000 customers in Clare, Cork, Kerry, Limerick and Tipperary.

A spokeswoman said the damage was mainly attributable to trees falling on overhead lines as a result of the high winds.

More than 25,000 properties remained without power at 10am.

But the company expected to have power restored to most customers by Saturday evening.

Areas most affected include the Iveragh and Dingle peninsulas and areas of West Cork including Macroom.

Status yellow warnings were issued on Friday for 11 of the Republic's 26 counties.

A red level warning was issued for counties Kerry and Clare in the south west of the country.

Irish weather forecaster Met Eireann said the highest gusts recorded were at Mace Head in Galway where 122 km/hour was observed, while gusts reached 119 km/hour at Shannon Airport.

Mace Head also recorded the highest mean wind speed at 93 km/hour.

The forecaster said very windy conditions would continue on Saturday morning, before easing."

Whilst the winds will abate, it will still be windy into the afternoon, with brisk northwest wind steering down a mix of sunny spells & scattered heavy showers," it tweeted.

ESB Networks has urged people to stay safe and stay clear of any damaged electricity network as it may be live.

It asked the public to report any damage to 1850 372 999.
