Irish weather forecast: Temperatures to plunge to a freezing -3C tomorrow night with frost and risk of icy patches

It's time to break out the winter woolies as temperatures will plunge to lows of -3C tomorrow night Met Eireann have warned.

Wednesday will start off cloudy and drizzly but there will be spells of heavy rain also.

The rain will begin in the southwest and west during the late morning and early afternoon, extending gradually eastwards this afternoon and evening.

This will be followed by clearer conditions, with scattered showers, will follow later into west Munster and Connacht and highs of 7C to 10C.

Winds will be mostly light to moderate southerly, but strong northwesterly winds will develop this afternoon along Munster and Connacht coasts.

There will be some clear spells tonight but parts of Connacht and Munster may experience some heavy thundery bursts.

Temperatures will drop to lows of 0C to 4C with a risk of frost under clear skies.

Tomorrow will be cold and breezy with similar daytime highs of 7C to 10C.

There will be further outbreaks of rain and drizzle across the eastern half of the country and with some heavy bursts in eastern coastal areas.

Brighter further west, with scattered showers, some heavy in Atlantic coastal counties.

After dark, the mercury will take a serious nosedive, falling to lows of -3C to 2C.

A forecaster warned: "Cold, with frost and a risk of icy patches. Fog patches also, as winds slacken."

Meanwhile, Friday morning will see the frost and fog will clear gradually to reveal a mainly dry and bright, with sunny spells, but fog may linger in sheltered places.

Highest temperatures of 6C to 10C, in light variable breezes. Becoming breezy on Friday night, with rain extending from the Atlantic, accompanied by freshening southerly winds.

Cold at first in the east, with a risk of a slight frost, but generally frost free.
