Irish weather forecast: Temperatures to drastically plunge to -3C as snow arrives in Ireland

Temperatures are set to plummet to -3C following the arrival of snow in Ireland.

Met Eireann said on Wednesday parts of Munster and Leinster could experience snowfall after being hit with a yellow rainfall warning.

Several counties have woken up to a blanket of white, with Irish Mirror readers sending in their photos which shows snowfall in Co Carlow, Co Kildare and Co Laois.

Met Eireann is forecasting more "wintry showers" on Thursday, but these are expected mainly on hills and mountains.

And the weather chiefs are predicting that overnight temperatures will be as low as -2C on Thursday night.

There will be some sunny spells this afternoon, while highest temperatures are to range between 5C and 8C.

A forecaster said: "Frost and icy stretches mostly in parts of Connacht, Ulster and north Leinster clearing this morning to give a cold, bright day with good sunny periods.

"Many places will be dry, but scattered rain or hail showers will affect northwestern, northern and some eastern areas, these showers are likely to be more wintry on higher ground.

"Highest temperatures will range 5 to 8 degrees Celsius and feeling cold in the blustery northerly wind."

Met Eireann said a frosty few days will follow Thursday, with "colder than normal" conditions. It's expected to get as cold as -3C on Friday and Sunday night.

The Met Eireann forecaster added: "It will be cold and frosty on Friday night with temperatures falling to between 0C and -3C inland with a hard frost and patchy mist and fog also.

"Frost in some eastern areas on Saturday night cloudier with rain at times further west.

"Cold with scattered outbreaks of rain for a time on Sunday gradually giving way to drier brighter conditions with some sunny breaks in the afternoon.

"Cold and frosty on Sunday night with patchy mist and fog also with overnight lows of 0C to -3C."
