Irish weather forecast: Stunning snow pictures in Ireland as nationwide warning issued by Met Eireann

The first snows of winter blanketed parts of the country this weekend - and it was stunning.

With the big day just nine days away, it’s not too early to be dreaming of a White Christmas as the forecast for snowfall remains on the radar.

A Status Yellow warning for snow-ice was in effect over the weekend with weather chiefs predicting the wintry showers.

And the warning will still be in place on Monday morning as temperatures plunged to lows of -3C on Sunday.

The alert was due to expire on Sunday morning but forecasters extended it until 10am on Monday due to the freezing conditions.

Scattered wintry showers, sleet and snow are predicted, with these conditions especially prevalent on higher ground.

Met Eireann has warned that motorists and pedestrians should also be aware that there may be icy stretches on roads and footpaths with a “sharp to severe” frost gripping the country on Sunday.

And forecasters say the bitterly cold snap will continue till midweek.

Met Eireann said: “Monday will start cold and frosty across the country with icy stretches. Further showers will affect the northwest and coastal areas of the west, carrying further east for a time in the afternoon, otherwise there will be a good deal of sunshine.”

Wrap up warm if you’re heading out as highest temperatures will only reach 3C to 5C in the afternoon with fresh to strong southwesterly winds.

And the mercury will plunge again after dark to lows of -3C under clear skies.

Similar temperatures are expected on Tuesday which is expected to be a mainly dry day with highs of 3C to 5C and teeth-rattling night-time temperatures falling below freezing point.

The good news is we’ll get a reprieve by the middle of the week, with temperatures creeping back up to highs of 9C by Wednesday with a frost-free night expected.
