Irish weather forecast: St Stephen's Day will see the return of the rain in Ireland

We may have had a dry yet chilly Christmas Day but it looks like St Stephen's Day will see the return of the rain.

Met Eireann has forecast that patches of rains will hit most of the country today but temperatures are set to be mild.

A forecaster said today will be "mostly cloudy and rather blustery today with patchy rain and drizzle. More persistent rain will affect Ulster and north Leinster for a time this morning."

But temperatures are set to be "increasingly mild" with temperatures ranging 7C to 12C.

Sadly the wet weather will continue into the evening with "scattered outbreaks of rain across the country" along with some hill and coastal mist.

A forecaster said tonight will be "mild and frost-free" with minimum temperatures of 7C to 10C.

Tomorrow is set to be "rather cloudy in the west and north on Friday with occasional rain and drizzle."

"It will be predominantly dry for eastern and southern counties with some bright spells and just the odd shower" with maximum temperatures of 11C to 13C while Friday night will be mild and breezy overnight with temperatures not falling below 7C or 8C.

Saturday will be breezy with fresh southerly winds, which may increase strong in some exposed coastal areas.

"A lot of dry weather is expected, but it will be generally cloudy. Some rain may affect parts of the northwest coast through the day and overnight."

Thankfully Sunday will be mainly dry and mild with highs of 11 to 13 degrees.

"A lot of dry, bright weather, but rain is set to develop sometime late on Sunday along the northwest coast. Winds will be moderate to fresh and southerly in direction. The rain will edge into western and northern areas overnight on Sunday.

But Monday will bring more rain in the north and west will spread eastwards in the morning and become patchier.

Met Eireann added: "Parts of the south and east will remain dry with good sunny spell for most areas by late afternoon. Highest temperatures of 11C to 13C.

"Moderate southerly winds will veer westerly and ease as the rain clears. Monday night will be a cold and clear night with temperatures dropping back to between -2 to +2 degrees. Frost and icy patches will develop. Winds will be light variable allowing patches of mist and fog to form."
