Irish weather forecast: Status Yellow snow-ice warning in place for Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo ahead of more wintry showers

Ireland is set to shiver as the freezing conditions show no signs of abating.

A Status Yellow snow-ice warning is in place for Donegal, Sligo and Leitrim this morning as forecasters warned of further wintry showers.

These parts were hit with hail, sleet and snow yesterday making travel difficult and forcing some schools to stay shut.

Met Eireann said: "Showers of hail, sleet and snow continuing throughout Wednesday and early Thursday, leading to icy patches. Some snow accumulations over high ground."

The warning will be in place until 12pm on Thursday.

And forecasters revealed we're in for a baltic Thursday morning with "widespread wintry showers" expected at the weekend.

They said: "Cold and frosty this morning with some icy stretches and patches of mist or fog.

And wintry showers will remain common for the next few days with temperatures staying chilly.

A Met Eireann spokesman added: “Most places will be dry, with sunny spells.

“Scattered showers will, however, continue to affect parts of the north and north-west of the country and some will be wintry.

“Top temperatures of 5C to 8C. Moderate or fresh west to north-west breezes will back south-west and ease by evening.”

Tonight will start off clear and dark, with temperatures dropping to lows of -1C to 2C.

Outbreaks of rain will extend from the west and southwest overnight.

Meanwhile, Friday will see falls of sleet and hill snow in northern areas but this will later turn to rain.

"Widespread wintry showers" are expected on Saturday night after a cold and windy day.

Met Eireann have warned the outlook continues to be unsettled into the weekend, with "cold, wet and windy weather at times."
