Irish weather forecast: Status Yellow rain warning issued for Waterford and Wexford with up to 30mm to fall

The southeast of Ireland is bracing itself for heavy and thundery showers after Met Eireann issued a Status Yellow rain warning.

Weather chiefs sent out the alert for Waterford and Wexford as they revealed up to 30mm of rain will drench the area, while spot flooding is also expected.

The alert will be in place from 10am on Friday until 6am on Saturday.

The rain will become widespread during the morning across Munster, Leinster, southern parts of Connacht and south Ulster on Friday, but it will stay mostly dry further north, apart from scattered showers.

Friday is set to be very chilly with temperatures staying in single digits during the day and plunging to freezing point at night.

A Met Eireann forecaster warned: "A cold day with afternoon highs of 5C to 8C degrees Celsius and there may be some sleet on high ground in parts of the east.

"Cold overnight with temperatures of 0C to 3C with frost forming and some icy patches possible."

There will be a distinct nip in the air over the October Bank Holiday weekend, with Met Eireann predicting "frosty nights" and "bright crisp days".

Saturday will be a cold, bright day with good sunny spells. Most areas will be dry, but scattered rain or hail showers will affect the north and northwest. Moderate west to northwest winds and highest temperatures of 6C to 8C.

It'll be cold and frosty on Saturday night with lows dropping to freezing point or even a little lower in places.

Heading into Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday, the freezing conditions will continue with "widespread frosts" and "icy patches" expected at night.

A forecaster said: "Good sunny spells by day and afternoon highs of 7C to 11C. The nights will be quite chilly, temperatures dipping below zero and widespread frosts, with the risk of icy patches."
