Irish weather forecast: Status Yellow rain warning in place for five counties as south braces for deluge

The south and south south-east of Ireland is braced for a deluge of rain as a 36-hour warning was issued yesterday.

Met Eireann put counties Tipperary, Kilkenny, Wexford, Waterford and Cork under a Status Yellow alert until 12pm tomorrow.

It comes as up to 50mm of rain is expected to fall, which may lead to spot flooding in some areas.

A spokesman said: “From the early hours of Wednesday to noon on Thursday, spells of heavy rain at times will give amounts of 30mm to 50mm with a risk of spot flooding.”

Met Eireann is predicting a mostly cloudy day today with heavy showers and long spells of rain forecast for most parts.

It will be slightly warmer than in recent days, with highs of 9C to 11C.

The spokesman said: “The rain will be heaviest over Munster and south Leinster with a risk of spot flooding.

“Moderate to fresh southerly winds becoming strong and gusty in coastal areas of Leinster.

“Further outbreaks of rain overnight, again heaviest over east Munster and south Leinster with the continuing risk of spot flooding.

"Staying windy too in moderate to fresh southeast winds. Lowest temperatures of 4C to 7C."

The warning will remain in place as we head into Thursday with scattered outbreaks of rain, some heavy and prolonged falls across the south and east.
