Irish weather forecast: Snow to hit on Sunday and Monday as Met Eireann predicts temperature plummet to -2C

Snow will hit Ireland on Sunday and Monday as temperatures drop to -2C.

Despite Saturday being relatively dry, Met Eireann believe showers will turn to "longer spells of rain, sleet or snow" on Sunday night.

A spokesman said: "A mostly dry but cloudy day today, with isolated light rain or drizzle. Rain will reach the west coast during the evening.

"Afternoon temperatures of 7C to 9C, in light to moderate southerly breezes, fresh to strong along western and northern coasts.

"Rain will spread across the country tonight accompanied by fresh southerly winds. The rain will clear the west later and it will turn colder here.

"Minimum temperatures of 4C to 6C by morning in the west and between 6C and 9C in the east.

"Rain will clear the east coast in the morning and it will turn colder everywhere. Sunshine and scattered showers will follow from the west.

"Some showers may be wintry. Maximum afternoon temperatures of 5C to 7C in moderate to fresh southwest winds."

The forecaster added: "A cold and blustery day on Monday with sunny spells and showers, some of sleet or snow.

"The showers will be heaviest and most frequent in the west in fresh and gusty southwest winds. Maximum afternoon temperatures ranging from 3C to 7C, coldest across Ulster.

"There will be clear spells and blustery wintry showers on Monday night with minimum temperatures of -2C to +2C and a fairly widespread frost in areas sheltered from the fresh westerly breeze."
