Irish weather forecast: Snow-ice warning in place for Connacht, Cavan and Donegal ahead of wintry showers

Ireland is set to be met with spells of hail, sleet and even some snow this morning but the sun will rear its head in parts of the country throughout the day.

A snow-ice warning is in place for seven counties as chilly conditions grip the west and northwest.

Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo and Leitrim, Cavan and Donegal are all affected by the alert which came into effect at 6pm on Sunday and is valid until 11am this morning.

A Met Eireann spokesman said: “Cold and wintry weather will develop from Sunday evening.

“Showers of hail, sleet and snow will occur in places. Snow showers most frequent in Ulster and Connacht and especially so on high ground.”

The spokesperson added while today will be cold and blustery with scattered showers, some hail and sleet, there will also be a mix of sunny spells and highs of 3C to 6C.

Met Eireann said: “Some snow showers also, mainly on high ground. There is also a risk of thunder, mainly in Atlantic coastal counties.

“Showers will be more isolated in the east and southeast where it will be largely dry.”

In the west the showers will be scattered or frequent through the day and will be heavy and wintry in nature, with a risk of thunder and hail.

There'll be accumulations of snow over the hills and mountains with lower levels seeing mainly wet snow or sleet.

And AA Roadwatch are advising motorists to exercise caution due to slippery road conditions in parts of Donegal, Sligo, Roscommon and east Galway after snow or hail showers.

It’s also frosty around Tullamore in Offaly.

Tonight will be very cold, with the forecaster warning of widespread sharp frost, icy stretches and blustery wintry showers continuing.

Temperatures will plunge to lows of -1C under clear skies.

Looking ahead to Tuesday, it's set to be another cold day with further scattered showers, most frequent across the western half of the country.

Temperatures will be between 4C and 6C in fresh to strong southwest to west winds.
