Irish weather forecast: Snow could hit Ireland this weekend as Met Eireann says 'wintry falls' possible

Snow could hit Ireland this weekend as "some wintry falls" are possible, according to Met Eireann.

The cold weather looks set to continue as the weather chiefs are saying sub-zero temperatures are likely.

It's expected to be windy over Thursday and Friday, and it appears the breezy conditions will roll on into the weekend.

A forecaster said: "It will continue cold and showery during the weekend with some wintry falls possible.

"Frost is likely at night with minimum temperatures close to or below freezing. It will be breezy at times as well.

"It looks like it will continue cold early next week with sunshine and showers."

Meanwhile, the national forecaster has warned of hail showers and thunderstorms affecting Atlantic counties on Wednesday.

And the "odd wintry fall" is forecast for higher ground. Highs will range from just 4C to 7C.

The forecaster said: "Mainly dry and bright at first in the east but showers in the west will become widespread during the morning.

"The showers will be most frequent in Atlantic counties, some of hail and thunder, with the odd wintry fall possible on higher ground.

"Highest temperatures of only 4 to 7 degrees, in fresh and gusty westerly winds."

Wednesday night be chilly with lows of 1C, and sleet showers may be followed by patches of rain.

The Met Eireann forecaster said: "Good clear spells a first tonight and mainly dry.

"Later in the night cloud will thicken and rain will develop, possibly preceded by sleet on high ground.

"Lowest temperatures of 1 to 4 degrees early in the night. Winds will moderate but it will continue breezy on west and south coasts."

Thursday will be mainly dull and wet, with gale force winds hitting the west coast.

There is a risk of "very windy conditions" on Friday, but there will be some sunny spells.

And wintry falls may hit on Friday night too, as temperatures are expected to fall close to 0C.
