Irish weather forecast: Rainfall warning in place for 10 counties but Laois will escape worst of rain as Electric Picnic kicks off

Electric Picnic revellers breathed a sigh of relief yesterday as Co Laois avoided a weather warning.

Met Eireann issued a Status Yellow alert for rain for 10 counties across Ireland but Stradbally will dodge the worst of the rain.

The weather alert is valid from 6am this morning and will be in place until 6am tomorrow.

It covers all of Connacht, Donegal, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick.

A forecaster said: "Rain will turn heavy and persistent on Friday and Friday night bringing the risk of localised flooding.

"Rainfall totals of 30-50mm are expected during the period, higher in mountainous areas.

They added: "Rain through much of the west and north of the country today, persistent and heavy at times."

Motorists are advised to take care while driving in wet conditions due to reduced visibility.

But those heading to Laois for Electric Picnic will be delighted to learn it will be drier in the east and south with just a few outbreaks of rain.

Highest temperatures will reach 16C to 20C, warmest in the southeast in gusty south or southwest winds.

Looking ahead to tomorrow, a forecaster said: "Saturday will be a brighter day with sunshine and showers.

"Highest temperatures of 16C to 18C in moderate, occasionally fresh westerly breezes."

Sunday will see tens of thousands of GAA fans head to Croke Park for The All-Ireland final.

Dublin and Kerry will battle it out for Sam Maguire and the forecast is for a fresh and cool day with sunny spells and scattered showers.

Some of the showers will be heavy, especially in the west and northwest. Highest temperatures just 14C to 17C with moderate to fresh west to northwest winds.

Early indications for next week are for occasional outbreaks of rain, but overall a good deal of dry weather. Temperatures will remain around normal for early September.
