Irish weather forecast: 'Pulse of rain' to batter Ireland as Met Eireann warns of gale force winds

A "pulse of rain" is set to batter parts of Ireland on Thursday.

And Met Eireann has also warned of possible gale force winds on what is expected to be a wet and windy day.

Heavy and persistent rain will mainly hit the north and west on Thursday, as wind speeds begin to pick up.

It will be far milder than recent days, with highs of up to 12C.

A forecaster said: "Windy on Thursday, and cloudy with outbreaks of rain to begin the day, most persistent in the north and west.

"The rain will ease or clear for a time in the afternoon, especially in Munster and Leinster before another pulse of rain moves into Ulster and Connacht later, spreading to all areas.

"This rain will be heaviest and most persistent in the northwest where some heavy falls are possible.

"Southwest winds will be strong and gusty and may reach gale force for a time near north and west coasts. Mild, with maximum temperatures of 11C or 12C."

Meanwhile, Wednesday will see patchy rain in the west early on, but the east should remain mostly dry.

The forecaster said: "Skies will clear from the west with good sunny spells developing in most areas, with just isolated showers following, most likely in the north and west later.

"Highs of 8 to 10°C in light to moderate southwesterly breezes, which will be fresh to strong on northwest coasts."

Although temperatures won't hit below 0C on Wednesday night, the weather chiefs have warned of some possible frost in the east.

"A few clear spells early tonight, with isolated showers becoming confined to the northwest, before cloud thickens and more widespread rain reaches the west coast before dawn and spreads eastwards.

"Lowest temperatures in the early part of the night of 1 to 3°C in the east and 2 to 5°C in the west, with some frost possible in eastern areas.

"Moderate southwesterly winds increasing fresh to strong around coasts."
