Irish weather forecast: National Emergency Coordination Group to meet as Storm Jorge set to batter Ireland

The National Emergency Coordination Group will meet on Friday morning ahead of the arrival of Storm Jorge.

Met Eireann has issued a Status Orange wind warning for seven counties as Ireland prepares to be battered by gusts of up to 130km/h.

The cyclone is circling in the north Atlantic and is expected to make landfall on Saturday.

Jorge will bring severe winds and high seas, which could add to flooding already experienced across the country.

A spokesman from the Department of Planning said: "The NDFEM Crisis Management Team has been meeting daily over the last number of weeks and met again today, receiving the latest updates from Met Éireann, OPW, local authorities and other critical agencies.

"Given the prolonged period of very wet weather, the flooding that has already occurred and the potential impact of Storm “Jorge”, due to hit Ireland this weekend, the NDFEM has decided to convene a meeting of the National Emergency Coordination Group (NECG) tomorrow morning in the National Emergency Coordination Centre, Agriculture (NECC)."

An orange alert for Galway, Mayo, Clare and Kerry will kick in at 6am on Saturday, while the same caution for Donegal, Leitrim and Sligo will start at 12pm.

Both warnings will be in place until 3am on Sunday, with average wind speeds of up to 80km/h expected to hit the coastal counties during this period.

Met Eireann said: "Some severe winds expected during Saturday associated with Storm Jorge (Hor-hay).

"Southwest quickly veering west and later northwest will reach mean speeds of 65 to 80km/h with gusts of 110 to 130km/h, possibly higher in very exposed areas with an elevated risk of coastal flooding."

The rest of the country will be on yellow alert, as gusts associated with Storm Jorge may still be as powerful as 110km/h.

The warning for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Roscommon, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford will be valid from 9am on Saturday until 3am on Sunday.

Met Eireann said: "A band of very strong winds, associated with storm Jorge (Hor-hay) will extend across the country during Saturday morning and persist through the rest of the day and into the night.

"Southwest veering westerly winds of mean speeds 50 to 65km/h with gusts of 90 to 110km/h expected."
