Irish weather forecast: Miserable weekend in store as Met Eireann predicts thunder and heavy rain

A miserable weekend is in store as thunder and heavy rain are set to lash parts of the country over the next few days.

Temperatures will dip to lows of 5 degrees overnight on Friday and Saturday, and possibly even colder under clear skies on Sunday.

But there will be some improvement at the start of next week, as conditions are expected to stay slightly drier on Monday and Tuesday.

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "There'll be further widespread showers today, occasionally bringing a rumble of thunder.

"Winds will be light variable in direction over land and will be fresh to strong from a westerly direction along the south coast.

"Highest temperatures will range between 12 and 15 degrees. There'll be sunny spells, with the sun low in the sky causing dazzling at times.

"There'll be further showers tomorrow, Saturday, with sunny spells for much of the country, along eastern coasts the showers will be most frequent, merging at times to give longer spells of rain and heavy at times too through the morning.

"Highest temperatures 12 to 15 degrees with light to moderate northwest to northerly winds continuing fresh at the coasts."

But the wet weather will largely clear on Sunday, with the start of next week looking slightly drier.

A forecaster added: "Sunday will be a dry day with sunshine.

"Temperatures during the afternoon will range between 11 and 14 degrees and winds will be mainly moderate northerly. It'll turn cold on Sunday night under clear skies with light winds and there'll be misty conditions developing.

"The mist will linger for a time on Monday morning then it will be a mainly dry day with some sunshine breaking through the best in the south.

"Temperatures will again range 11 to 13 degrees with light variable winds and it'll turn cold again overnight on Monday night.

"Cloud will increase during Tuesday as rain approaches from the west later in the day but much of Tuesday itself will stay dry."
