Irish weather forecast: Miserable rain to continue with risk of 'thunder and flooding' as Status Yellow warning remains in place

Ireland looks set to continue getting soaked today while a Status Yellow weather warning remains in place.

The caution, which is for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow and Waterford, says there is a risk of heavy showers, with the possibility of "thundery downpours and flooding."

It is due to be lifted at 3pm.

Meanwhile, the country woke up to a rather cloudy and damp start to the day, with showers developing nationwide.

A Met Eireann spokesman said: "Drier and brighter weather will develop across the western half of the country during the day but it will remain mostly cloudy for eastern counties with patchy rain.

"Maximum temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees in moderate north or northeast breezes.

"Winds will fall light overnight with mist and fog forming widely across the country. A patchy frost will develop with minimum temperatures ranging from 1 to 4 degrees.

"Dry in most areas to start the day on Sunday with some frost and areas of mist and fog.

"Outbreaks of rain will develop in Munster during the afternoon, before extending gradually northeastwards across the country in the evening.

"However, it will hold dry across much of Ulster and Leinster until nightfall. Top temperatures of 8 to 10 degrees in moderate southeast winds."

The forecaster added: "Scattered outbreaks of rain across the country on Sunday night but rainfall totals will be minimal in northern counties. Minimum temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees in moderate southeast winds.

"Mostly cloudy on Monday with patchy outbreaks of rain and drizzle but good dry periods also.

"Highest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees in light, variable winds. Cloudy overnight with a few patches of light rain or drizzle.

"Areas of mist and fog forming in the light winds. Minimum temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees."
