Irish weather forecast: Mild and dry start to the week but temperatures expected to plummet tonight

Ireland will enjoy a mostly dry and sunny day before temperatures plummet again tonight.

While a few showers in the northwest will spread south later in the day, it's expected to remain fairly mild.

But weather chiefs have warned that temperatures will drop subzero again this evening.

A Met Eireann spokesman said: "Dry with sunny spells today. There'll be mist on hills and coasts.

"Rain and drizzle affecting the northwest this morning, will gradually spread southeastwards as the day goes on, becoming lighter and patchier as it does so.

"Afternoon temperatures of 9C to 11C generally, but falling back to between 6C to 8C in the north and northwest after a mild morning.

"Light southwest or variable breezes will veer northerly in Connacht, Ulster and north Leinster.

"Becoming mainly dry and cold under clearing skies over the northern half of the country tonight with lowest temperatures of -2C to 3C.

"Less cold in the south where skies will be cloudier bringing patchy outbreaks of rain and drizzle, lowest temperatures there of 4C to 7C.

"Light or moderate east to northeast breezes will allow mist patches to form and thicken into fog at times."

Tuesday will be mostly dry apart from the occasional shower, but will be cold and frosty early in the day.

Some mist patches may linger further south, where it will be more cloudy.
